This is how it works: The winner gets more territory at the cost of the loser. International relations are about power and land-grabbing, whereas justice and international law are ultimately just a show to provide a fig leaf of legitimacy for the naive audience. This is how the US annexed half of Mexico and how Austrian, Hungarian and German territories were distributed among the victors of the world wars. Why should it be different now? 

Did anyone really think that history has suddenly changed for the better? States should follow their interests and make the best deals possible for themselves. Maybe the official acceptance of Russian authority over Crimea could help the United States get control over Greenland, and maybe Ukraine could be divided in a way that in part reverts the artificial westward shift of Poland after WW2.
